Bari![]() Bari is capital of Apulia region in southern Italy. It is very important seaport, economical and educational center of Italy. The ancient settlement was founded by the Peucetii near the third century BC. Since that time it developed as main strategically important sea port and centre of a fishery. The city consists of several areas that belong to the old part of the town in the north and the new districts of the city in the east. The old city is called Barivecchi. Closely build constructions, sprawl streets, many pubs and other places for entertainment, squares of Piazza Mercantile and Piazza Ferrarese are welcoming tourists nowadays. The Basilica di San Nicola that was founded in 1087 is among the main sights of the city. In the crypt there lie the relics of Saint Nicholas. The day of St. Nicholas is celebrated all over the world but the date varies from one country to another. In Italy it is celebrated in May from 7 th to 9th, and on the 6th of December. In former Soviet Union countries it holds on 19th of December. Other frequently visited place of interest is Bari Cathedral in Romanesque architecture style. It was build between the 12th and 13th centuries. Castello Svevo or the Swabian Castle is old Norman-Hohenstaufen construction with huge walls. It is surrounded by a moat and only southern bridge and the gates lead to the hart of the castle. Lots of exhibitions and galleries are arranged there. Bari attracts pilgrims and tourists that are interested by ancient history. |
