Reggio di Calabria![]() Reggio di Calabria is situated in the in southern Italy in the Calabria region. It has significant economical and education meaning for the country as commercial port and university city. Reggio di Calabria is also called the "city of Bronzes" because of two bronze full size statues of Greek warriors. These are the main examples of ancient Greek sculpture. In former period statues were maid of marble. It’s also known as the "city of Bergamot" because it is cultivated near the city. The "city of Fatamorgana" it is called because of the optical effect, which could be seen only from the Reggio di Calabria seaside in Italy. The Riace bronzes that were founded in the coast of Riace, near Reggio Calabria are exhibited in the National Museum of Greater Greece and attract many visitors. After Cumae, Reggio di Calabria is the second oldest Greek colony in southern Italy. The inhabitants of Chalcis and Messenia founded the settlement on the toe of the Italian peninsula. The city reached great economic power and political influence during the 5th and 6th century BC. Art, culture, sculpture and poetry schools were rapidly developed in the region since that time. The city is a home of notable people of past such as sculptor Pythagoras and poet Ibycus and of present times such as talented fashion designers Gianni Versace and Donatella Versace. This magnificent old city of Reggio keeps secrets in every building and street and its old traditions and atmosphere are still the same. |
