Trieste![]() Trieste is the capital of north eastern Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It is the nearest port to the border with Slovenia, witch is located on the Adriatic Sea. The location close to Slovenia and at the main crossroads is the main factors that influenced on historical and cultural heritage of the city. This city was in the center of historical events when it was part of the Habsburg Monarchy, Austro-Hungarian Empire and finally a part of Italian Republic. Citizens of Trieste speak local dialect or Triestine language that is common with the official Italian language but also used in several of the immediate suburbs of Slovenia. Serbian, Croatian, German and Hungarian languages are also common for Trieste. The city is very beautiful with lots of picturesque streets, squares, avenues and boulevards where buildings of Gothic, Romanic and Renaissance architecture are constructed. Miramare Castle considered one of the most interesting sites. It is built in the seashore and surrounded by magnificent gardens with a remarkable collection of trees and plants that were gartered by order of Maximilian. There are a plenty of churches and cathedrals in Trieste: the St. Justus cathedral, the Serb-Orthodox temple of Holy Trinity, the basilica of St. Silvester, the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and others. Main archaeological remains are Roman gate arch of Riccardo, basilica Forense and Roman theatre, Roman age temples. In Trieste are the unique caves such as Grotta Gigante (the largest tourist cave in the world) and the cave of Trebiciano (with the Timavo river inside). |
